It’s hard to find playable versions of these videos if you are in the US. The MTV UK: “Spanking New Sessions” website block you out if you are in the US. I found a few on MSN. The similarities to Westside Sessions is so striking it’s hard to think that there is not some sort of connection. A Rolling Stone article states that SNS started in 2007. I shot the first Westside Session in Sept. ’07, and I can guarantee you I never saw a SNS until this morning. Maybe just a case of ‘great minds think alike’. I certainly like what they are doing — don’t agree with some of the editing choices, a few too many and unnecessary cuts, sometimes you just have to sit back and trust the material is entertaining enough on its own merit.

Okay. Two posts about Hulu back to back. You’re going to think I’m on that site all the time, but that’s not the case. I just understand what kind of content you can find on the site – namely NBC and FOX products. Which is why I’d like to point out that this very popular clip from SNL this weekend can be found on Hulu! Why watch a low quality upload on YouTube that was ripped off of some news program (illegally, not that anyone cares these days)?

This version is ad-supported, which is the TV model. It keeps good programming broadcast to the public for free. Accept a quick pre-roll ad, and a small mid-roll graphic in return for high quality video delivered via legal routes. I’ll continue to highlight the best that Hulu has to offer, but give it a spin. The interface is cool and clean, unlike the obnoxious YT dogpile of random vids and get-rich spammers.

Bottom line. Funny spot, reminiscent of the good ole days of SNL. Let the parodies begin for ’08 politics:

I don’t know how I missed this game, but I missed it. I’m a big TCU fan, so I was pulling for the like-minded BCS breakering Broncos. Also, I visited the campus earlier that year on business…how did I miss that game? Thank goodness NewsCorp makes the NCAA sign away their lives on the dotted line. Can you believe the whole game is available at hulu.com?!? Well, here’s the short cuts version.

If you don’t know what Hulu is, it’s worth investigating. The future of tv is uncertain but Hulu, netflix, and the Roku Box have me making certain presumptions. You? A year and a half ago, when I missed this game, I could not have imagined so easily embedding it on my blog. Enjoy.

The bottom of the case comes off with just around 13 screws, which appear to be identical, so keeping tracking of their location isn’t necessary.

This is the view of the turntable’s innards, which will greet you after removing the outer cover. In the bottom-right corner you can see the stereo and ground outs, which were protected from view by a little metal cover that has been removed along with the cables.

Here are the old cables, after being pulled away from their connections. The inner wire carries the signal, and the outer shield (often braided copper *see new cables* but in this case seems to be braided aluminum?) is twisted and soldered to ground. Here’s a link to a diagram of an RCA connector:

I used some good quality 6′ RCA cables, which will end up giving me a little more length and better quality than the 25+ year old original cables. These are standard A/V RCA cables, I pulled off the third “video” cable, chopped the connectors off one end, and stripped the insulation back.
Then I neatly twisted the braided copper shield.

As shown in the first detail of the Technics’s output terminals, I identified the correct terminals and soldered the new cable into place. Then, I carefully taped back the delicate wires that carry the signal to the up and through the arm an into the turntable’s cartridge and replaced the protective metal cover, making sure not to pinch the wires. Because of the thicker new wires, I thought I might have to dremel the outer plastic case, but it squeezed on fine.

TMBG’s new album, The Else, is available on vinyl! Here’s a clipping from the TMBG’s newsletter:

Flansblog 9000
“We are on the bus! The Else hits the road, accompanied by a chihuahua named Lola! Big news on a few fronts – the VINYL album is in record stores (our first vinyl in over a decade) and will be at shows soon, but if you can’t wait scroll down for the link! In the recent milestone dep’t I think we might have forgotten to mention to you all that our myspace page now has over 50,000 friends, and TMBG were in the NYTimes crossword for the second time this year! Crazy man, crazy!

Okay – off to the radio station we go!
-Flansy”

I emailed Rounder Records asking if they offer or plan to offer digital downloads with purchase of an LP, but it doesn’t look like its a feature of their site. Also, I don’t know if it’s an 180gram pressing, but I’m going to their show at the Avalon (Oct 4th), and I’ll get my vinyl copy there and report back in the comments.

I went to club Spaceland in Silverlake on the 25th for a benefit concert to support the Circle X Theatre Company. On the walls of the entrance, I saw flyers for an upcoming show by the Minus 5 the very next Saturday. I hadn’t kept up with their music, but I’d owned and enjoyed the bands eponymous debut EP as part of the Hello CD of the Month club, of which I was a subscriber back in ’93.

I immediately went to the Yep Rock Records website, and found “Down with Wilco” on vinyl plus 3 other albums available for digital download. Additionally, DWW is a 180 gram audiophile pressing, and Yep has a great feature called “My Stash”.

How can you resist a promotion like this:

Buy the CD or LP and get the digital album in your Stash right away as DRM-free MP3s!

This is a limited edition LP, there will only be one press of Down With Wilco on vinyl. Be sure to get yours now! All orders of this album come with a free digital version which you can download from your Stash right away!

After checking out, having purchased both “The Gun Album” on digital download and the “Down with Wilco” LP, I received confirmation LP would be shipped the next day. I logged back into the Yep Roc site, clicked on the moustached guy peering behind a door to find My Stash: 26 tracks of instant gratification.

Within minutes I downloaded the albums, and the next day I saw the band live at Spaceland. Four days later, a newly converted fan, I recieved the vinyl in the mail and spun it at home. Yep Roc Records has the dual format delivery feature down, and I’m tempted to buy their whole catalog. Browsing their site, I see the following artists all have a similar promotion. Again it’s such a deal, considering the price difference (Down with Wilco CD = $15.99, Vinyl = $17.99).

Sloan: Never Hear The End Of It
Los Straitjackets: Rock En Espanol Vol. 1
The Apples in stereo: New Magnetic Wonder
Dolorean: You Can’t Win
Robyn Hitchcock: Ole! Tarantula
